What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a computer assisted brain-training technique that helps individuals achieve optimal states of mind. Neurofeedback is effective in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, migraines, post traumatic stress disorder and more. It is often used by high functioning individuals to achieve peak performance. Some people are able to reduce or eliminate medications by doing this training. Neurofeedback harnesses the power of the brain to heal the mind and body.

A Neurofeedback Session

While sitting in front of a computer screen, sensors are placed on a persons scalp. These sensors pick up brainwaves that are amplified and analyzed by the neurofeedback software. Via video imagery or a computer game, the individual is given moment to moment feedback that gently pushes brainwaves to more optimal states.

The Science Behind Neurofeedback

It is well understood that our brains produce a range of brainwave frequencies, each indicative of a particular state of mind, from deep sleep to acute alertness. Most of us regulate effortlessly between these states. Some of us however, suffering from depression or anxiety for example, may have trouble recovering quickly from these feelings. Neurofeedback can help foster the sort of brainwaves that make us feel good by promoting more nimble neural activity. Persons with anxiety often show an excess of high frequency brainwave activity when it is unwarranted, such as when sleep is desired. Neurofeedback can help train a person to achieve brainwave activity that is more appropriate to the task at hand.
